I thought this video would work well with Chapter 10. It provides an insight into how grocery stores design the store layout to maximize profits.

  1. Why are high volume merchandise items placed around the perimeter of a store?

  4. What are power items and where are they placed? Why?
  5. What types of items are placed near the checkout? Why?

Logistics (Chapter 10)

This video explains the basic concept of logistics in terms of bottled water. It would be an excellent video to introduce the topic.

  1. Briefly describe the concept of logistics in terms of the raw materials to create a bottle of water andĀ  then in getting that water to consumers.

Target Ad Goes Viral (Chapter 10)

It is difficult for a retailer to stand out among the competition, especially if the retailer does not want to focus on price. This article about Target’s ad for Halloween went viral. I think it can generate a lively discussion in your classroom.

Retail Brands Use Social Media (Chapter 10)

Social media has become an important component for retail stores. Over 90% of retailers now use 2 or more channels to communicate with customers. I think this article can create some interesting discussion about social media and retailing.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why is it important for retailers to use social media?
  2. Why do you think apparel retailers are the most connected?
  3. Why do you think Instagram has shown the most growth?
  4. Do you follow any retailers through social media? If so, which retailers and which social media? If not, why not?

Can Advertising Save Sears? (Chapter 10)

This article in Adweek would be great for a discussion about retailing and the potential role of advertising.

Distribution (Chapter 10)

While distribution and logistics are not the most exciting marketing topics you can discuss, both areĀ  important functions. These videos can be used to supplement the information in the textbook.

  3. Do the activity suggested at the end of video supporting your decision for each of the products.
  4. Describe the logistics function provided by American Global Logistics (2nd video).
  5. Why is it important for American Global to integrate all of their services for clients?
  6. Watch the video about the distribution center for Tractor Supply. Identify the 3 most important points made by the video.
